Struggling to Reduce the Number of Unwanted Puppies Born on the Streets
Rescued stray puppy Little Boy suffers from Sarcoptes Scabei (Canine Scabies), a skin disease spread by several species of mites.
Dear Patterson Martina,
Although we continue to provide successful rescue and sterilization campaigns each year, the number of stray puppies in Galati is somehow growing at unprecedented rates.
Even as we increase the number of campaigns, we are encountering more puppies on the streets than previous years. In the last three months alone we have rescued more puppies with severe injuries and medical conditions than in the first six months of 2018, including a brother and sister who were temporarily paralyzed from tick toxins; a lone survivor with genital cancer; and a 5-month-old with a broken paw that will most likely need amputation.
Little Boy is not the first puppy—or dog—we have found on the streets suffering from Sarcoptic Mange. In fact, mange is one of the most common diseases that afflict stray dogs because it’s easily transferred between hosts and given their vast numbers, you can imagine how many are infected in the streets of Galati, not to mention the billions worldwide.
Sarcoptic Mange symptoms vary from hair loss, bald spots, reddened skin, body sores and scabs. The intense itching results in restlessness and frantic scratching that eventually causes bacterial infections. The condition is often treated with antiparasitic medications and medication to relieve itching, inflammation and secondary skin infections. However, results are usually seen after one month of treatment.
Dogs infected with Sarcoptic Mange also suffer physiological stress that must be managed and treated.
Puppies like Little Boy less than 18 months old are especially prone to developing localized demodectic mange. Little Boy must undergo months of treatment and quarantine.
Little Boy has begun treatment, and it will be weeks before his skin completely heals. He was found with aggravated skin lesions and blood matted fur from the bites and scratches he inflicted to try and alleviate his discomfort.
His big brown eyes were filled with fear and desperation. He was unable to help himself, unknowingly aggravating his condition in an attempt to ease his pain. The scars that now cover Little Boy’s body are a testament to his struggles and his hopelessness—the same ones shared by the billions of stray dogs across the globe who are constantly neglected and ignored, left to fend for themselves, which sadly, is not enough to save them from despair.
Today, we are reaching out to you for donations to help treat other stray dogs like Little Boy ( www.paypal.me/SaveStrays ) afflicted with skin diseases like Sarcoptic Mange who will continue to suffer without the intervention of our medical assistance.
Far too many of them are currently being neglected.
They need our help now! Donate today ( www.paypal.me/SaveStrays ).
Sincerely,
ROLDA News Team
