VICTORY: California Bans Fur, Wild Animals in Circuses, & Bobcat Trophy Hunting!
Dear Martina,
in a historic victory for the animals, California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed three landmark animal protection bills into law—banning circus animal acts, the sale of fur, and bobcat trophy hunting statewide!
SB 313 – Circus Cruelty Prevention Act
Introduced by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), SB 313 bans circus animal acts throughout the state, making California the third state (joining New Jersey and Hawaii) to enact such a ban! The bill goes into effect on January 1, 2020.
AB 44 – Fur Products Prohibition Act
Introduced by Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) in December 2018, AB 44 bans the sale and manufacture of new fur products statewide—making California the first state in the nation to outlaw fur! The ban goes into effect on January 1, 2023.
AB 1254 – Bobcat Hunting Prohibition Act
Introduced by Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Los Angeles), AB 1254 creates a moratorium on the trophy hunting of California’s iconic bobcats. The bill makes California the first state in the nation to ban the trophy hunting of bobcats.
Thank you to everyone who emailed/called their legislators in support of these bills!
