Monkeys Aren’t Astronauts!
Dear Shawn,
During the dark, early days of space flight, dogs and primates were abused and often died during terrifying experimental missions. Today, nearly all exploration is accomplished with cutting-edge technology that doesn’t harm animals, and the European Space Agency (ESA) flat out stated that it “declines any interest in monkey research”.
So why then is the Russian Academy of Sciences considering abusing monkeys as part of a projected mission to Mars?
Russia’s plan involves subjecting four macaques to years of gruelling experiments as part of the country’s space exploration programme.
NASA, the ESA and the China National Space Administration are advancing their space programmes without abusing primates, but Russia’s proposal would take space exploration back to the ’50s – when terrified dog Laika, a husky mix, was crammed into a capsule, was shot into space and died from overheating and panicking within hours of lift-off.
