Ten Worst Zoos of 2017! Who made the list?

Dear Friend,

by some measures, 2017 was a banner year for the wild and captive elephants of the world; At least 44 zoos around the globe, including 29 here in the United States, have closed their elephant exhibits for good and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus took down their tents for the last time, ending a decades-long history of criminal abuse and exploitation. Prohibitions against the use of elephants for entertainment were passed in Illinois and New York State, and New York City has joined with over 100 other jurisdictions in the United States and Canada legislating partial and even full bans against the use of all wild animals in performances.

Our work however, is far from over.

Zoos follow a losing strategy of sexually abusive captive breeding programs to stock elephant exhibits. It does nothing to further the conservation of this ecologically vital species. While performing elephants may be becoming a relic of history and an unkind reminder of our tragic past; elephants in zoos across North America are still being forced to perform. They are subjected to barbaric bullhooks, grossly inadequate and unsuitable conditions, egregious disregard for their needs, captivity-caused health problems, cold climates, incompatible companions, and crushing isolation in endless solitary confinement.

It is inexcusable. It is unconscionable. And we must act now to make it stop! Your donation today helps to make it happen!

What Popeyes didn’t want you to see (Video)

Dear Martina,

Despite public outcry, Popeyes has refused to commit to higher welfare standards for chickens in their supply chain. But you’ve been fighting back: In the past few months, you left Facebook comments, you tweeted at them, you called them, and you signed our petition ( www.ciwf.com/blog/2017/10/tell… ) by the thousands.

And last week, we delivered your message to Popeyes, face-to-face.

We kicked things off with a (silent) bang, holding silent protests at several locations around Popeyes’ hometown of Atlanta. Thanks to you, we made a big splash around the city—not only at the events themselves, but in local media. Chickens were front page news ( www.ajc.com/business/atlanta-b… ) ahead of and during the protests, and stories about our cause reached over 5.8 million people!

A few days later, we took things to the next level.

Over 151,000 of you signed our Change.org petition ( www.ciwf.com/blog/2017/10/tell… ) demanding better from Popeyes—and last Tuesday, we delivered ( www.facebook.com/CompassionUSA… ) each and every one of those signatures, in person, to Popeyes’ corporate headquarters.

Strangely, Popeyes forced us to delete our video of the actual delivery under threat of legal action. But that didn’t stop us from making your voices heard—and it won’t stop us from continuing to fight back until they do the right thing for animals.

Thank you for standing up for chickens! We’ll keep you posted on the latest developments and more ways to take action, so stay tuned.

And if you’re looking to reward yourself for a job well done, we’re giving away one autographed copy of the latest book from Peter Wohlleben, the author of the New York Times best-seller The Hidden Life of Trees! His new book, The Inner Life of Animals, is a deep dive into the emotional intelligence of creatures big and small—from chickens to deer, pigs to butterflies. Head over to our Facebook ( www.facebook.com/CompassionUSA… ) or Instagram ( www.instagram.com/p/BeQ3ItWH8E… ) to enter. We’ll be choosing the lucky winner on Thursday, February 1!

I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful start to the new year. Thank you for all you do for animals!
