Marine biologist Jane Watson has made no secret of her opposition to the federal Conservatives’ approach to science. An “assault” is how the Vancouver Island University professor described it at a January town hall attended by concerned academics.
Watson has devoted her career to the ecology and conservation of marine mammals. So when news broke this week that the government had removed North Pacific humpback whales from the list of endangered species, stripping mandatory critical-habitat protections for an animal whose breeding grounds overlap with proposed Northern Gateway pipeline shipping routes, you might think Watson would be angrier than ever.
